In Windows 10, you have to say goodbye to Windows Media Center and with it, the ability to play DVDs natively. Fortunately, there are always solutions out there that allow us to watch DVDs in Windows 10 for free. But what if you want to play Blu-ray discs in Windows 10 since it still can not play Blu-ray directly?
Conceivably, VLC is the most popular as well as powerful free and open source tool in the market. The 2.0 and later version of VLC Media Player support Blu-ray media playback on Windows 10 with some extra operations. You can download the latest version from VLC official website. However, for legal reasons, AACS and BD+ DRM libraries and keys still are not shipped. That means only Blu-ray disc with AACS libraries exposed are supported for playing on Windows 10. Below I will introduce the guide referred from VLC’s forum.
How to Play Blu-ray Freely on Windows 10 with VLC Media Player?
Step 1: Go to videolan.org, download, install and run the latest version of VLC for your Windows 10 system.
Step 2: Go to: http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/ to download the KEYS DATABASE(KEYDB.cfg) and AACS DYNAMIC LIBRARY(libaacs.dll for Windows 10 or libaacs.dylib for Mac).
For Windows 10 Users
1. KEYS DATABASE
* Open your user area (“C:Usersyour usernameAppData”)
* Enable view hidden files and folders (Under Folder Options – View tab then select “show hidden files…”->select ok)
* Open “AppData” directory or create a folder and name it aacs
* Place the downloaded KEYDB.cfg file in this folder directly.
Download Install AACS dynamic library for VLC to use:
2. AACS DYNAMIC LIBRARY
* Go to “c:Program Files” [Or "c:Program Files (x86)" if running 64bit]
* Navigate to “VLC” directory, and move the libaacs.dll file into it.
Now, you can easily play Blu-Ray disc with VLC on Windows 10 for free. Note: The latest VLC still doesn’t have menu support yet.
For Mac users
You may navigate the corresponding folder and move into the necessary files as follow. Go to: http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/, get the necessary files.
1. KEYS Database
Mac OS: put it in ~/Library/Preferences/aacs/ (create it if it does not exist)
2. AACS Dynamic Library
Mac OS: right-click on VLC, choose “Show package contents” and put that file in Contents/MacOS/lib/
Tip: VLC does not yet support Blu-ray menus so you must manually select title to play. Not all Blu-ray movies are supported.
Errors You May Encounter When Playing Blu-ray on Windows 10 in VLC
“I downloaded the latest version of VLC which is 2.1.3 Rincewind. Then I followed the instructions above and put everything in the right directory, but when I try to ply the blu ray disc, I get this error message:
Blu-ray error:
This Blu-ray Disc needs a library for AACS decoding, and your system does not have it.
Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘bluray:///D:/’. Check the log for details.”
In fact, not all the Blu-ray discs are supported. VlC can only deal with discs which its library has the corresponding AACS keys. However, for legal reasons, AACS and BD+ DRM libraries and keys still are not shipped. If VLC still can’t help you play Blu-ray disc movie on Windows 10, you need a third party software to help you.
